The History of the U.S. Branch of U.N.I.T.
Since its inception in May, 1986, the club has produced a monthly newsletter called the Trap One Report which has kept members up to date with the latest happenings in Doctor Who fandom as well as touching upon other science fiction and British media related programs. The club meets regularly for general meetings, outings, parties, and convention trips.
Over the years the club has volunteered its services to several convention promoters including the Friends of Doctor Who, Doctor Who Fan Club of America, Creation Conventions, Spirit of Light, and K & L Productions, to name a few. The club has also assisted several PBS stations with fund drives during the period when Doctor Who was widely shown on PBS. A club fanzine, Robots, Rebels, & Renegades, was produced on an annual basis. R, R,&R featured fiction and art based around various science fiction and British series, as well as wholly original material. In a lighter vein, various club members have also participated in the recording of filk tapes: humorous recordings of songs whose lyrics have been rewritten in a science fiction context.
Such was the enthusiasm of members from areas outside Massachusetts that several club divisions have formed which also host regular activities in their local areas. Since 1992 the club has been organizing conventions and bringing Doctor Who guests to the New England area.
In 1994, we became the financial backers and primary organizers of the WishCon convention (now called United Fan Con). As you can see, our commitment to Doctor Who fandom is solid. We will continue to devote our time and energy toward producing one of the best Doctor Who, science fiction/British media clubs in the world.
Not only has the club served to gather fans together, it has also become over the years a family. Several members have married, and have often included club members on their special day.
